Sociology Recommended Course Sequences

Below is a recommended, not required, sequence for each year of a General degree and an Honours degree, and a Sociology Combined Honours degree, and one combined with Criminology, and last the Major and Minor Concentrations in Sociology. Generally speaking, beyond the required courses for each Sociology program, there is considerable flexibility for students to take courses in other subjects. Students are encouraged to take a semester or year of study abroad and receive equivalent credit. Please note that the courses listed below are not necessarily taught every year.

 

General Degree

Year One: 48-101, 48-102, 49-112; four first year courses in other departments, such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, or 11-162), English (26-100 or 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, or 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Anthropology (49-111), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, or 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100, 53-106, or 53-120); one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages and one other course from Sociology or Anthropology.

For students wishing to specialize in Social Planning, 48-180 would be recommended.

Year Two: 48-202, 48-210; three other Sociology courses selected from 48-204, 48-205, 48-206, 48-207, 48-225, 48-226, 48-227, 48-228, 48-232, 48-234, 48-235, 48-236, 48-240, 48-241, 48-251, 48-280, and 48-281; one from Science; one from Arts and Languages; and three other courses from any area of study excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

For students wishing to specialize in Family, Sex and Gender, 48-204, 48-205, 48-206, 48-251 and 49-214 from Anthropology would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in International Development, 48-226, 48-227, 48-232 would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Race and Ethnic Relations, 48-232, 48-240, 48-241 would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Social Planning, 48-225, 48-226 (or 49-226), 48-227, 48-228,48-241 (or 49-241), 48-280, 48-281 would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Work Relations, 48-225 and 48-228 would be recommended.

Year Three: 48-302 and 48-310 (or 49-355); three other Sociology courses selected from 300 or 400 level; two other Sociology courses from any level; and three other courses from any area of study excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

For students wishing to specialize in Family, Sex and Gender, 48-306, 48-329, 48-350, 48-351, 48-352, 48-354, 48-409, and 48-461 would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in International Development, 48-321, 48-325, 48-327, 48-330, 48-332, 48-340, 48-352, and 48-411 would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Race and Ethnic Relations, 48-333, and 49-331, 49-406 from Anthropology would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Social Planning, 48-326, 48-352 (or 49-352), 48-354, 48-381, 48-480 and 50-192, 50-341, 50-401, 50-452 from Planning and 43-347 from History would be recommended.

For students wishing to specialize in Work Relations, 48-321, 48-326 and 48-332 would be recommended.

 

Honours Degree

Year One: 48-101, 48-102, 49-112; four first year courses in other departments, such as Classical Studies (11-160, 11-161, or 11-162), English (26-100 or 26-128), History (43-101, 43-102, 43-123, or 43-124), Labour Studies (54-105), Anthropology (49-111), Philosophy (34-130, 34-129), Political Science (45-130, 45-160, or 45-170), Visual Arts (28-150), or Women’s Studies (53-100, 53-106, or 53-120); one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages and one other course from Sociology or Anthropology.

Year Two: 48-202, 48-210; 02-250 an introductory statistics course; one additional Anthropology course which is not cross-listed with Sociology; one from Science; one from Arts and Languages; and four other courses from any area of study excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

Year Three: 48-302, 48-308 and 48-310 (or 49-355); two other Sociology courses from any level: two other Sociology courses selected from 300 or 400 level; and three other courses from any area of study excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

Year Four: two 400-level courses including one selected from 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, or 48-415 (or 49-415); three other Sociology course at any level; five other courses from any area of study excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

 

Combined Honours Sociology Degree

Year One:  48-101, 48-102, 49-112; four first year required courses from other subject area; one from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; and one other course from optional courses.

Year Two: 48-202, 48-210; 02-250 an introductory statistics course (or equivalent) is required; one from Science; one from Arts and Languages; four second year required courses from other subject area; and one other course from optional courses.

Year Three: 48-302, 48-308 (an equivalent statistics course may be substituted for 48-308, in which case one additional Sociology or Anthropology course is required) and 48-310 (or 49-355); two other Sociology courses selected from 300 or 400 level; and five third year required courses from other subject area.

Year Four: two 400-level courses including one selected from 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, or 48-415 (or 49-415); five fourth year required courses from other subject area; three other optional courses to total forty courses.

 

Combined Honours Sociology and Criminology Degree

Year One: 48-101, 48-102, 49-112; 02-250 an introductory statistics course; one Philosophy course from either 34-129 or 34-226; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; two other courses from Arts and Languages, or Social Sciences including Sociology; and one course from any area of study, excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

Year Two: 48-202, 48-207, 48-210, 48-260, 48-261, and 48-262; one course from Science; one course from Arts and Languages; one other course from Arts and Languages, or Social Sciences including Sociology; and one course from any area of study, excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

Year Three: 48-302, 48-308, 48-310 (or 49-355) and 48-363; three courses selected from 48-361, 48-362, 48-367, 48-368, 48-370, 48-371, and from Anthropology 49-323; two other courses from Arts and Languages, or Social Sciences including Sociology; one other courses from Arts and Languages, or Social Sciences including Sociology.

Year Four:  two 400 level courses, including one from the selected courses of 48-403, 48-404, 48-405, 48-408, 48-415 (or 49-415); one course selected from 48-410, 48-460. 48-461, 48-464, 48-465, and 48-466; three other courses from Arts and Languages, or Social Sciences including Sociology; four courses from any area of study, excluding Sociology (48-) and any Anthropology (49-) courses cross-listed with Sociology.

 

Major and Minor Concentrations - Bachelor of Arts and Science

Major Concentration: 48-101, 48-102, 48-202, 02-250 an introductory statistics course, 48-210, 48-302, 48-310; three 300 level or above courses; two courses selected from 48-404, 48-405, 48-406 and 48-408.

Minor Concentration: 48-101, 48-102, 48-202, 02-250 an introductory statistics course, 48-302 and 48-310.
