Tribology of Materials Research Centre

The new Tribology of Materials Research Centre, a state-of-the-art laboratory complex will be housed at the new Centre for Engineering Innovation (CEI) of the University of Windsor - a facility costing over $112 million.

The Centre will be equipped with the largest variety of state-of-the-art tribological testing and characterization facilities in any Canadian university, and will serve to carry out fundamental and applied research on friction, wear and the lubrication of advanced engineering materials, composites and surface coatings.

The research programs to be conducted at the Tribology of Materials Research Centre will be aimed at improving the performance of materials, manufacturing processes and clean energy conversion systems through the application of modern tribology.

The Centre will draw its strength from the synergy and complementary nature of faculty members with a wide variety of expertise on tribology research. The primary collaborators of the Tribology of Materials Research Centre will be Canadian companies, universities and government research laboratories.

Collaborative projects to be undertaken are expected to be of a diverse nature and include:

  • Aluminum, magnesium alloys for lightweight automotive applications;
  • Innovative coating technologies;
  • Wear resistant titanium alloys for aerospace applications;
  • Carbon based coatings for machining and forming;
  • High temperature solid lubricants;
  • Surface engineering for fuel cells and batteries;
  • Biologically-inspired engineering surfaces.
