Jude Abu Zaineh’s MFA thesis show Home is Where the Maqlouba is, uses a multidisciplinary approach to discuss nostalgia, home, and place-making. Maqlouba (a traditional Palestinian dish) is at the heart of the work in an attempt to understand transnationalism and cultural identity. Abu Zaineh’s research into immigrant food practices allows her to further explore what it means for Palestinians to exist in a migratory space of “in-betweenness”; attempting to conform and adapt to the cultures and traditions of their new homesteads while maintaining a connection to their Palestinian heritage and identity.
Abu Zaineh is a Palestinian Canadian artist and cultural worker based in Windsor, ON. She has exhibited her work locally and internationally in: São Luis and Lisbon, Portugal; Mexico City; NYC; and Toronto. She recently completed a residency with the Ontario Science Centre (OSC) and MOCA Toronto where her site-specific installation is currently exhibited at OSC. Abu Zaineh is a director at Arts Council Windsor & Region, is completing her MFA at the University of Windsor, and will continue on to pursue her PhD at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in NY.
