Computer Vision & Face Recognition: The Basics
A free workshop with Nicolas de Cosson

Lambton Studio A

Join us in Studio A – Lambton Tower (basement) for a workshop that demonstrates how to use Computer Vision (such as face tracking and or recognition) in your performance or installations.

There are numerous useful examples and help-files within cv.jit - We will focus on the basics of using face tracking and motion detection – How to set it up in your Max MSP patch and how to get useful data for use. We will also look at a few patches that use face recognition and tracking, plus any patches you may have that already use it or are looking to incorporate the technology.

What does this mean for you?
You can use face tracking to do any number of things, like start video playback only when there is a face in view, or control some kind of trigger such as sound playback. You might even consider using your mobile phone as a webcam and control a specific parameter in your performance when you attempt to take a selfie ;)

What you will need:

HARDWARE:

  • Laptop with webcam
  • If your laptop does not have a built in webcam, bring an external one.
  • Chargers (always good to have!)

SOFTWARE:

  • Max MSP
  • CV.jit external - if you are using max 7, it is very simple to install just go to your package manager and search for cv.jit – Otherwise you can find it here: http://jmpelletier.com/cvjit/
