Bishop captures gold medal at Pan Am Games

Lancer track & field alum Melissa Bishop has claimed the gold medal in the women's 800m at the Pan Am Games on Wednesday night in Toronto.

The Eganville, Ont. native placed first overall with an impressive time of 1:59.62.

Sitting third for much of the race, Bishop moved to the outside and into second place with 150 metres to go and then outkicked American Alysia Montano, who was fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games, down the stretch to take the gold medal in 1:59.62.

"These feelings are hard to put into words," Bishop said. "That crowd is what carried me home. All those people screaming at you, it's an unbelievable finish."

Bishop, who helped the Lancer women's team win three CIS track and field championships, was beaming as she accepted her gold medal.

"Singing Oh Canada and seeing our flag raised is something you dream of," Bishop said. "Gold at home! How much sweeter does it get?"
