Multidisciplinary Research Scientist and Research/Postdoctoral Positions in Disease Modeling, Toxicology, and Science Policy

We are recruiting creative, talented, and motivated research scientists and research/postdoctoral fellows to join our multidisciplinary research environment at the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods and the Canadian Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods.

Our primary goal is to develop human biology-based in vitro platforms for disease modelling and toxicity testing—areas of interest include human stem cell-based disease modelling, cellular and tissue engineering, synthetic biology, in vitro & computational toxicology, and science policy. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary projects and interact with national and international stakeholders from academic, industry, and regulatory sectors (including Health Canada).

The successful candidates will be key leaders in the design, conduct, analysis, validation and publication of human biology-based disease modelling and toxicological platforms. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in the areas specified below as well as post-doctoral training in a field deemed highly relevant by the program. Ideal candidates must be quick learners with the energy, enthusiasm, and innovation to design and execute new projects and protocols, and able to multi-task experiments independently and in a team environment. Good laboratory technique and superior problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required.

For each position, candidates must have demonstrated expertise in respective areas:

Disease modelling (develop human biology-based cell/tissue models)
Positions located at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario
Research Scientist (3+ years of postdoc experience) and Research/Postdoctoral Fellows

  • Ph.D. in Molecular/Cellular Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related field
  • Expertise in human somatic and induced pluripotent stem cell techniques
  • 3D cell culture (histotypic & organotypic) experience essential
  • Tissue engineering (organoids, 3D bioprinting) experience essential
  • Outstanding background in cellular and molecular biology
  • Experience in CRISPR-Cas editing is highly desirable
  • Experience in organ-on-a-chip/microfluidics is preferred
  • Industry experience is an advantage
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written

Toxicology (build in silico methods to support chemicals evaluation)
Position located at Health Canada in Ottawa, Ontario
Research/Postdoctoral Fellow

  • Ph.D. in Toxicology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Molecular/Cellular Biology, Applied Mathematics, or Computational Biology
  • Outstanding background in toxicokinetics
  • In-depth knowledge of physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling
  • In-depth knowledge of in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE) modelling
  • Experience in biochemical and molecular biology-based assay systems is essential
  • Hands-on experience in modelling software (GastroPlus, Matlab, SPSS, SAS or R)
  • Strong knowledge in statistics (stochastic or machine learning analysis)
  • Experience in computer programming is required (VBA, R, C or Python)
  • Knowledge of linear modelling, regression and analysis of variance, trend analysis, and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) modelling will be an asset

Science Policy (literature & systematic reviews; research policy & strategic roadmaps)
Limited-term positions at the University of Windsor or flexibility to work remotely

  • Ph.D. in the life sciences/health sciences
  • Broad understanding of biomedical research concepts regardless of discipline
  • Expertise in meta-analysis and comprehensive literature surveys
  • Experience in theoretically-driven research design, data collection, and qualitative data analysis
  • Primary responsibility is to prepare and publish scientific reports and manuscripts
  • Work with experts in academia, industry, and government to strategize science policy
