“Authority and Agreement”
Abstract: About arguments from authority (or expertise) most theorists say that it is a necessary condition for good arguments of this kind that the larger community of relevant experts should agree with the cited authority. I call this the Ag-con Condition. After reviewing some of the schemes that have been proposed as characterizing arguments from authority, we are led to three problems stemming from the inclusion of Ag-con: (1) The dilemma problem, (2) the scheme problem, and (3) the regress problem. These are genuine problems, I think, when lay arguers lean on authority arguments for support. Having recognized the problems, an attempt is made to overcome them.
