“Newton and How to Reason about Nature”

Proposal: Newton's Principia first appeared in 1687.  It underwent two revisions with the final third edition appearing in 1726, one year before the author's death.  Arguably it is either the greatest scientific work ever to appear, or nearly so.  I would argue that it is also one of the greatest philosophical works ever to appear.  What I shall do in this CRRAR presentation is the following:

1.    First I will outline the methodological themes, which arise out of a careful reading of the Principia.

2.    Second we will see that crucial to the fulfillment of Newton's ideal of empirical success and argument for Universal Gravitation is the application of what Newton calls his Rules for Philosophizing.

CRRAR Note:  This presentation is based on a paper that goes into greater scientific and mathematical detail regarding the arguments presented in various learned academies.  I’m hoping that the philosophical and historical account presented here can serve as a point of intersection for discussion in argumentation and rhetoric.
