Victorian comedy to open University Players 2014 bill

University Players continues its 55th season with Oscar Wilde’s deliciously witty comedy, A Woman of No Importance, February 6 to 9 and 12 to 16 at Essex Hall Theatre.

Set amidst the splendour of an English estate, the Wildean satire lays bare the moral inconsistencies of Victorian society. In between wooing the ladies, the devilish Lord Illingworth is keen to appoint young Gerald Arbuthnot as his personal secretary. But the revelation of a long-hidden secret forces them to face their pasts and admit some hard truths. This brilliantly biting comedy unfolds into a high class scandal, where all is to be revealed.

“A Woman of No Importance is a play filled with beautiful, cutting-edge, and witty thoughts,” says the play’s director, Lee Wilson. “They could only be expressed by Oscar Wilde himself—he was a master of words and ideas.”

Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, February 9, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance. For information or tickets, call 519-253-3000, ext. 2808 or visit www.UniversityPlayers.com.
