Nothing says “let’s celebrate!” like free cake, says Alisa Giroux-Soulliere, and reaching 10,000 likes on Facebook is something to celebrate.
“It shows the sense of community that surrounds the University,” she said.
Social media coordinator in the Office of Public Affairs and Communications, Giroux-Soulliere presided over the distribution of about 200 pieces of cake Wednesday in the CAW Student Centre.
“People were happy to get the cake and the students said it was a cool tie-in for the last day of classes,” she said.
Biology student Nancy Bui said she follows the University of Windsor on both Facebook and Twitter.
“It’s good just to know what’s going on,” she said.
Giroux-Soulliere says she tries to provide relevant content of interest to students, staff and other supporters of the University.
“The beauty of social media is that it encourages dialogue,” she said. “Facebook is there for us to join in conversation.”
The only advertising of the giveaway was across social media, about 15 minutes before the cake was served. The two large slab cakes – chocolate and vanilla – lasted just over 30 minutes.
The University’s Facebook page is www.facebook.com/uwindsor. The next celebration will be 20,000 likes, said Giroux-Soulliere.
“We don’t have a target, although of course we would like our content to be accessed by everyone who can use it,” she said. “It’s more about celebrating the milestones along the way.”
