Medical Education Building third floor provides shared space for nursing and physician programs

His experience in the simulation labs as a UWindsor nursing student helped Andrew Peltier land his dream job. Even before his June Convocation, the fourth-year student will take up a position in the emergency department of North York General Hospital.

He said the scenario-based job interview was not much different from what he did in the Faculty of Nursing labs.

“I can’t begin to explain how amazing and advanced the technology here is,” he said Friday to a roomful of dignitaries and donors celebrating the formal opening of the third floor of the UWindsor’s Medical Education Building. “Having experience with this facility, being able to run through scenarios, really prepared me for what I faced at the job interview.”

The reception concluded with a tour of the $4.2 million facility, which provides space for collaborative research by the Faculty of Nursing and the Windsor Program of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The third floor is designed to complement the building’s first two floors. It features nursing simulation learning facilities with set-ups for palliative care, primary care, and health assessment, among other applications. A lab and viewing room meets the simulation laboratory needs of the medical program, and also doubles as a seminar room with the ability to video-conference with Schulich’s main campus in London.

Collaborative research space includes a combination classroom/lecture room that seats up to 50 people, a seminar room, several groups suites and an interview room with viewing room. Common space includes a dedicated meeting room with video-conference capability, a kitchenette, lobby, and student lounge to facilitate informal inter-professional dialogue.

UWindsor president Alan Wildeman expressed thanks to the province for its support of the project.

“This new addition to our Medical Education Building will benefit our students, our faculty and staff, our community health care professionals who work with us, and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry as we collectively work together to provide the best health care education and new research ideas that can truly make a difference to the lives of people across our community,” he said.

Windsor West MPP Teresa Piruzza noted the benefits to the quality of life of local residents.

“It is facilities like this that help us attract and retain future medical and nursing students to our community,” she said.
