Staffers restock student food bank shelves

A donation of food to the student food bank at Iona College could not have come at a better time, office manager Sandi Rose said Wednesday as a staff group dropped off canned goods, pasta, cereals and sundries.

“Our supplies were getting low and we are just heading into the period when students really need to use it,” she said. “A couple of weeks ago, our shelves were almost empty.”

The food was collected by Windsor locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees for members of CUPE 1393 during its recent strike. Now that the UWindsor staffers are back to work, it only made sense to pass on the donations to students, said president Dean Roy.

“Our members were moved and inspired by the generosity of the community,” he said. “Now that we no longer need it, we knew that we had to pass it on.”

The foodstuffs more than doubled the current stock at the food bank, located in the basement of Iona College, 208 Sunset Avenue. Open to UWindsor students, it operates four days a week. Find more information on the Iona College website.
