The payroll deduction program allows faculty and staff to use their UwinCARD to charge food or bookstore purchases and have the cost deducted from their next paycheque. But as a number of UWindsor employees found out last semester, its benefits extend beyond convenience.

To encourage employees to activate the feature on their cards, the UwinCARD office has been holding monthly prize draws for its clients. Krystal Ives, graduate secretary in the economics department, says she was “thrilled” to learn she had won a Lancer coffee mug and UWindsor USB drive.

“What a nice surprise. I didn’t even realize there was a contest,” she said Tuesday. Clients are automatically entered in the draw each time they use their cards to make a purchase. Ives uses her UwinCARD to pay at campus food outlets, especially Tim Horton’s.

“If the weather is good, I’m there every day,” Ives said. “Having the card is really convenient because I don’t carry cash. This way, you don’t have to worry about having change. And it has your photo on it, so it’s secure.”
