Provincial title in men’s basketball up for grabs in Ottawa this weekend

The Windsor Lancers are one of three teams from the 2014 Wilson Cup Final Four returning to the Ontario University Athletics men’s basketball tournament this weekend. The Lancers join host Ottawa and the Carleton Ravens in repeat appearances; the Ryerson Rams missed out last year.

All four teams come into the weekend ranked in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport top 10 and have their eyes on the provincial title. Windsor, ranked fifth, will open the competition Friday at 6 p.m. vs. the no. 1 Gee Gees. The game will be webcast live at OUA.tv.

Windsor faced the toughest playoff test of the four remaining teams, knocking off the No. 4 McMaster Marauders 85-70 on the road in the quarter-finals. The Lancers grabbed headlines in the regular season when they defeated the Carleton Ravens 74-71 on January 23, but lost both their games against Ryerson and Ottawa.

Every team in the tournament is capable of lighting up the scoreboard, as they were the four highest-scoring teams during the regular season. Ottawa led the way averaging 94.1 points per game, followed by Carleton at 91.1, Ryerson at 89.3 and Windsor at 86.6.

Lancer stars named all-stars

The OUA announced Thursday its selection of Lancer men’s basketball players Rotimi Osuntola Jr. and Mitch Farrell as all-stars.

When it came to dominating in the paint, arguably no one was as good as Osuntola, who led the conference with 11.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He also controlled the game at the offensive end, averaging a team-leading 20.2 points—fourth-most in the province—and finished second in the league with 97 made free throws.

Receiving second-team honours for Windsor is Farrell, the team’s second-leading scorer with an average of 13.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Read more at goLancers.ca.
