Lancer teams to compete for national titles

Four Lancer teams will compete for national titles next weekend, but only the women’s basketball team will go in as provincial champions. Coach Chantal Vallée’s squad won a third straight Ontario University Athletics banner—its sixth in the last seven years—with a 71-51 home-court win Saturday over the Ryerson Rams.

Emily Prevost led the way, with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the game’s only double-double. Korissa Williams had 21 points and 11 rebounds in Friday’s semi-final 57-31 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

The players will head to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport final eight national championship tournament, beginning March 12 in Quebec City, seeking to make history as only the second team to hoist the Bronze baby trophy five consecutive years.

Men’s basketball team claims silver in Wilson Cup competition

The men’s basketball team claimed silver medals at the OUA Championships on Saturday night after falling to the Carleton Ravens 103-59. The squad had qualified for next week’s CIS title tournament with Friday’s 85-80 upset over the No. 1 ranked Ottawa Gee Gees. Alex Campbell led Windsor in scoring, with 20 points Friday and 15 Saturday.

The Lancers hold the second seed heading into the quest for the McGee Trophy and will open the national championships against the seventh-ranked and tournament host Ryerson Rams on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Men’s hockey wins OUA bronze and national playoff berth

One minute away from elimination, the Lancer men's hockey team came from behind to defeat the McGill Redmen 2-1 in overtime on Saturday at South Windsor Arena.

Ryan Green scored the equalizer with just 1:01 left in regulation to send the game to OT, and then added the game winner late in the first overtime period to give Windsor the victory. With the bronze medals, the Lancers receive the third OUA berth to the national championships in Halifax.

The seventh-seeded Lancers will open competition Thursday when they face the No. 2 seed University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT and can be seen live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.

Articles recall fifth and sixth turns hosting national track meet

From March 12 to 14, the St. Denis Centre will play host to the CIS track and field championship meet this weekend for the 10th time. Kinesiology student Richard Johnston has prepared a series of articles recalling each of the previous occasions Windsor has held the national tournament.

The 1998 meet marked the only time the same venue hosted for the third consecutive year. In 2003, middle-distance runner Ryan McKenzie’s four-medal performance—two gold and two bronze—was part of a 10-medal haul for the Windsor men that saw them retake the team title for the first time since 1993.
