Students debate global issues at UN model conference

Sixty local high school students had an opportunity to delve more deeply into world affairs this week during a United Nations simulation conference organized by the University of Windsor Model United Nations club (WINMUN) and the political science department.

Participants took on roles as representatives of such nations as France, the United Arab Emirates and Japan, to discuss matters of global concern.

The event, which was the first of its kind at UWindsor, divided students into three provisional committees – Security Council, Human Rights Council, and Crisis Committee – where they spent two days debating and voting on such issues as the situation in Ukraine.

“The conference allowed the students to learn about diplomacy,” said Fater Ali, a fourth-year Engineering student and the club’s president and secretary general.

“Hopefully they will be inspired to engage in international affairs and debates, as I have been.”

Students received a tutorial on debate skills as well as background information on the countries they were assigned to represent.

“The debate moderation style we adopt enables students to practice research and negotiation skills, lobby their ideas, and finally write an innovative resolution that solves the tackled issue,” says Ali.

“The UN Model Club urges participants to adopt empathy and social responsibility as global citizens of the world.”
