CIS names Lancer its female athlete of the year

Canadian Interuniversity Sport named Lancer Korissa Williams its female athlete of the year, after she led Windsor’s women’s basketball team to its fifth straight national title.

Williams received the Jim Thompson Trophy at a Calgary ceremony Monday, becoming the third BLG Award recipient from the University of Windsor. She follows in the footsteps of her former teammate Jessica Clemençon (2011), as well as cross country and track standout Ryan McKenzie (2003).

Head coach Chantal Vallée says Williams took her game to a whole new level this year. The 23-year-old was a dominating force in her senior season, ranking in the top five nationally in points (19.3), assists (4.7) and steals (3.6) per game while leading the Lancers to a CIS-best 19-1 record.

“She combined her tremendous athleticism with a desire to be the best at both ends of the floor,” Vallée says. “Off the court, she’s an amazing person. I feel truly blessed to have been able to coach her for the past five years.”

Cross country and track and field athlete Ross Proudfoot of the University of Guelph received the male award. Read the full story at
