High schoolers explore science at UWindsor

Sandwich Secondary students CJ Rempillo and Liam Salt were among a group of 34 high schoolers from across Windsor-Essex who spent a week in the Faculty of Science for short lectures, fun activities and lab exercises.

The visit, part of the UWindsor Science Academy program,  which took place June 6 to 10, is designed to give high school students an opportunity to experience life as a UWindsor Science Student first-hand.

“My favourite so far is chemistry,” says Salt, “And during biology day, we got to see all the different specimens and do some analysis on DNA. It was very interesting.”

As a student entering Grade 12, Rempillo says he found the demos and meeting with a science alumni panel has given him fuel for thought as he considers career options and university programs.

Chemistry lab supervisor and graduate assistant David Hirsh, says the outreach program gives all students a chance to participate and was similar to one he took part in during his high school years.

“The demos were what convinced me to peruse Chemistry.”

Biology professor Dora Cavallo-Medved says the program is very hands-on and gives students a chance to learn more about research conducted at the Univeristy.

“They leave with a better understanding about Science at UWindsor, a familiarity with our campus and a glimpse into their future.”
