UWindsor grad named to fellowship for women leaders in health

Two-time UWindsor grad Donna Wellington (BScN 1994, MBA 2004), vice president of operations at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital, is one of 15 women leaders in health selected to the inaugural class of the Carol Emmott Fellowship based at the Public Health Institute.

The program is one of only a few aimed at mid-career professionals seeking to establish the next generation of women leaders who will further transform health. The 14-month intensive program pairs fellows with mentors who are nationally recognized senior health leaders. Each fellow will plan and direct a project in her health community and “pay it forward” with the subsequent class of fellows, thus developing a lifelong network of collaborators and influencers.

In her role at Henry Ford Hospital, Wellington is responsible for coordinating, integrating and implementing all aspects of the continuum of care from admission to discharge including budgeting, regulatory compliance, process design and staffing.

She served nine years on the Windsor Regional Hospital board of directors and currently sits on the board of Hotel Dieu Health Care. Wellington is also a member of the advisory council for the World Health Integrated Network based at the Odette School of Business.

Christine Malcolm, director of the fellowship, calls the initial 15 women selected dynamic and innovative.

“They are accomplished professionals already demonstrating outstanding leadership abilities and results,” she says. “They are of diverse backgrounds and health disciplines, and are well positioned to have significant impact across the spectrum of health services.”

The fellowship reflects the life work of Carol Emmott (1946-2015), who throughout her 40-year career in health policy and executive search was instrumental in the rise of women to the upper echelons of the sector.
