Reading Week workshop to offer instruction in designing online courses

Instructors and graduate students interested in learning how to develop high-quality online and hybrid courses are invited to register for the Online Course Design Institute offered by the Office of Open Learning during reading week. The intensive workshop runs as two half-day sessions from 9 a.m. to noon on February 22 and 23.

The hands-on event will introduce participants to:

  • services and support available to help them develop their own courses,
  • key competencies for online instructors,
  • ways to engage online students in deep learning activities,
  • online communication strategies, and
  • ways to build communities of online learners.

The workshop will also explore ways of assessing learning in online and hybrid courses, principles for incorporating media in teaching, planning and developing online lessons, finding and using Open Educational Resources, and evaluating quality in online courses.

“This will be the third year we have run this intensive workshop format, and with the huge success of Windsor instructors in the provincial funding opportunities for online course and program development, we have seen a growing interest and need for these types of opportunities,” says Nick Baker, director of the Office of Open Learning.

“One good thing about the intensive program is that at the end of the two days you can basically have the key elements of an online or hybrid course designed, and a good sense of what is possible in a high quality course of this nature.”

Participants who complete both days of the program will receive a certificate of completion.
