Engineering professor wins royal accolade

The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences has elected UWindsor professor of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering Hoda ElMaraghy to international membership.

Founded in 1919, the organization is the world´s oldest academy of engineering sciences, and numbers about 1,000 Swedish and 300 foreign members.

Dr. ElMaraghy is one of only two non-Swedish engineers among 12 new fellows elected this year.

“This is a great international recognition of my scientific and engineering contributions and stature in the world,” she said.

ElMaraghy, a trailblazer for women in engineering, holds the rank of Distinguished University Professor. In 1994, she became the first woman to hold the position of dean of engineering at a Canadian university. She is a member of the Order of Ontario, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the International Academy for Production Engineering.

She also has ties to research in Sweden, serving since 2008 as a scientific advisor to Wingquist Laboratory VINN Excellence Center, at Gothenburg’s University of Chalmers, which awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2013.

Members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences promote the engineering and economic sciences and the advancement of business and industry. The academy aims to influence societal development and policy making through knowledge transfer activities and projects, and recognizes achievements in natural sciences, engineering and economics by distributing awards, scholarships and medals.
