Computer science recognizes coding contest winners

The School of Computer Science at the UWindsor held the Code/Design to Win event Friday, Sept. 28.

“This Communitech-sponsored event was a great success as we had the highest registration and participation of all 28 schools in Canada; 108 students from the University of Windsor and St. Clair College participated,” says Communitech campus ambassador and third-year computer science student Noah Campbell.

“In addition to this, we are proud to announce that two of our computer science students were ranked in the top 75 competitors nationwide and qualify for the national competition in January 2019. Events like these are crucial in giving students an edge when it comes to being able to showcase their technical skills in an interview and more importantly, a job. Windsor’s strong performance in this event highlights us as a leader in producing the industry’s top tech talent.”

Congratulations go to:

  • Adam Vandolder, third-year computer science co-op
  • Keerthana Madhavan, first-year computer science with software engineering co-op

These finalists will enjoy a weekend in Waterloo, fully funded by Communitech, where they will have the opportunity to meet with and tour the facilities of such sponsors as Google, TD Lab, Sonova, Deloitte, Manulife, ZTR Control Systems, Axonify, Oracle NetSuite, ConsenSys, and Thalmic Labs.

These students were also honoured with a $50 Amazon gift card at Computer Science Demo Day on Friday, Nov. 30.

Additionally, Mustafa Alwindawi received special mention and was recognized for having top marks as well. He received a Hidrate Spark water bottle, generously donated by WEtech Alliance.

“We will continue to provide experiential learning opportunities such as coding events to our students to help them hone their skills and gain further practice outside the classroom,” says Johanna Beneteau, internship co-ordinator in Co-operative Education and Workplace Partnerships.
