Partnership to bring electric scooters to campus

A partnership between the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance and a Kitchener-based startup aims to bring electric scooters to campus as soon as this fall.

Zip Dockless has been developing technology that will allow users to rent e-scooters through an app and leave them anywhere, without seeking out a charging station — that’s the dockless part, says founder Luke Mydlarz.

He says the system provides “affordable and environmentally-friendly transportation options for students.”

UWSA president Jeremiah Bowers calls the service a logical addition to the green UWindsor campus.

“We saw Zip as an opportunity to evaluate something new and exciting for students for Fall 2019,” he says. “Most importantly, it is at no cost to the students’ union. We look forward to seeing new and returning students zipping around campus.”

Mydlarz projects a top speed on the scooters of 25 km/h, with a range of 25 kilometres. Under provincial law, the e-scooters are not allowed on Ontario roads or sidewalks — regulations he is pushing to change.
