The Alumni Sports Hall of Fame will induct star athletes from swimming, hockey, and track & field in a video commemoration during the last week of September: all-Canadians Matt Butler (BA 1990), Scott Hillman (BHK 1999), Noelle Montcalm (BScN 2012), and Ositadinma (Osi) Nriagu (BComm 2005, B.Ed 2007).
Butler won seven provincial medals in his five-year career with Lancer swimming, including two gold medals in the 100m backstroke. He received the Olympic Shield in 1990 as male athlete of the year and still competes, brining home gold in the 100m backstroke at the 2009 World Master Games in Sydney, Australia.
Hillman, a defender on the men’s hockey team, is among the few Lancers to win both the Olympic Shield as athletes of the year and the DeMarco Award for combining academic and athletic prowess. In 1998, he led all Canadian defensemen in scoring and helped the blue and gold earn its first-ever Queen’s Cup provincial championship.
Montcalm led the Lancer women to four provincial and four national championships in track and field, and received the Wendy Jerome Trophy as OUA female track MVP three times. She continues to hold the school record in the 60m hurdles and is among the all-time top five in the 300m, 60m, 4x200m relay, and 4x400m relay.
Nriagu competed in both long jump and high jump with men’s track and field, helping the team win five consecutive OUA championships and three national titles. He continues to rank in the Lancer all-time top 10 in both events.
More information on the virtual commemoration will be released at a later date. Find a complete list of inductees on the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame website.
