Arts administrator to explore future of online exhibitions

The School of Creative Arts presents the second of three “SoCA Conversations in the Arts: “What is the future for online exhibitions?” Zoom events Thursday, March 18, with special guest TeaJai Travis, executive director of Artcite Inc., located in downtown Windsor.

Travis is an artist, activist, poet, playwright and community builder. He is of Afro-Indigenous ancestry, born and raised in Waawiiyaatanong, the last stop of the Underground Railroad, a freedom network that brought his family to the Canadian region of Turtle Island.

Appointed as Artcite executive director in January 2021, he brings with him a wealth of experience in community-based art and activism. Travis founded Bloomfield House in 2013 and sits on the board of directors at the Windsor Youth Centre working actively with several arts and community based organizations including Women Working with Immigrant Women (W5), Literary Arts Windsor, Friends of the Court (Mackenzie Hall), and Arts Can Teach.

“We are looking forward to hearing Teajai’s reflections on the last year,” says organizer Lee Rodney. “Along with his perspectives on some of the challenges and opportunities for virtual exhibitions and community-based work as it has been taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

SoCA invites students, faculty, and the community to this free informal online event. Each of SoCA’s featured guests have had different experiences during the past year, but all share a community focus in their work.

These conversations are 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Zoom. Featured guests:

  • Teajai Travis, Thursday, March 18
  • Jaclyn Meloche, adjunct professor, University of Windsor, and independent curator, Thursday, April 1

Each session includes a presentation, discussion, and question-and-answer period. All are welcome, but preregistration is necessary to attend. Email Dr. Rodney at lrodney@uwindsor.ca by Thursday morning for the Zoom link.
