Professor produces poetic reimagining of Old English epic

In a new rendering of the medieval epic Beowulf, UWindsor English professor Nicole Markotić offers a rollicking cover version of the fantastical, canonical text.

She will launch After Beowulf, her collection of original poems published by Coach House Books, with an online event Tuesday, April 19.

Welcome to Denmark’s Heorot Hall, where King Hrothgar invites to his banquet table everyone but Grendel. Dissing him initiates a monstrous backlash that only Beowulf can quash. Upending the tale, Dr. Markotić gives a nod to previous translations, winks at canonical critics, bares historical biases, and provides readers with new ways to embrace, challenge, or click with Anglo-Saxon heroics.

Tuesday’s launch begins at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom and will feature Markotić in conversation with poets Helen Hajnoczky and Ian Sampson, followed by a question-and-answer session.
