Faculty of Human Kinetics honours students and professors

The Faculty of Human Kinetics honoured the academic achievements of its students and recognized the excellence of its teaching faculty at the annual Scholars’ Evening Tuesday.

The Department of Kinesiology announced the recipients of 59 scholarships and bursaries, each worth up to $32,000. The event also recognized the 285 students who made the Dean’s Honour Roll for earning an average grade of 80 per cent in a minimum of five courses in a given semester during the 2021-22 academic year.

“We have many talented students in our program, both at the undergraduate and graduate level,” said Jess Dixon, head of the Department of Kinesiology. “This is our opportunity to recognize their achievements and to be grateful for the financial support our students receive.”

The Scholars’ Evening also recognized three faculty members for excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Patti Millar received the Wayne Marino Faculty of Human Kinetics Teaching Excellence Award for 2021, named in honour of a professor emeritus. In addition to being the acting associate dean of academic programs in the faculty, Dr. Millar is an associate professor in the Sport Management and Leadership program.

Faculty members Vicky Paraschak won the Excellence in Graduate Mentorship Award for 2021 and Krista Chandler won the award for 2022.

“Our core mission is creating a learning-centred atmosphere,” said Linda Rohr, dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics. “We have many outstanding instructors who are dedicated to this mission, and this year we are happy to honour the efforts of Drs. Millar, Paraschak, and Chandler.”

Now in its 38th year, the Scholars’ Evening is a Faculty of Human Kinetics tradition.
