UWindsor open collaborations win global recognition

A series of collaborative openly licenced projects funded by the provincial government’s Virtual Learning Strategy and led or co-led by UWindsor faculty, librarians, students, and staff from the Office of Open Learning have gained global recognition in multiple forums.

The Liberated Learners project, led by Trent University in collaboration with the University of Windsor, Brock University, Seneca College, McMaster University, Cambrian College, and Nipissing University, was recently nominated in both the open collaboration and best Open Educational Resource categories at the annual OE Global awards, ultimately winning in the latter. The project, which was co-designed by students, aimed to develop an open resource to help prepare post-secondary students to thrive in a digital realm.

Hot on the heels of this win, three UWindsor projects, including the Liberated Learner, were recognized by the Pressbooks open publishing organization in its list of the top open resources in Pressbooks for 2022.

The other two projects recognized were:

  • 2SLGBTQ+ Healthcare
by Selinda Berg, Scott Cowan, and Ashlyne O’Neil
  • Learning to be Human Together
co-designed by a large team of students, faculty, and staff at OCAD University, University of Windsor, Mohawk College, Brock University, Trent University, Nipissing University, University of Toronto-Mississauga

“It is fantastic to see these projects getting the recognition they deserve and putting the work of the UWindsor teams and our Ontario colleagues on the global stage,” says Nick Baker, director of the Office of Open Learning.

eCampus Ontario is also currently incentivizing instructors to adopt open educational resources developed under the Virtual Learning Strategy. For a limited time, educators who adopt one of the strategy’s open educational resources in their courses are eligible to receive a $300 honorarium for their efforts.
