The law student group “Snakes and Lancers” will receive a new award designed to honor mental health champions when the Office of Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility (OHREA) hosts its annual open house and awards ceremony on Friday, December 8, in Alumni Hall’s McPherson Lounge.
Brooklyn Echlin, soon to begin secondary school studies, said the Discovery Day program helped to introduce her to the UWindsor campus.
Discovery Day brought west end residents to campus for presentations that included a stage performance, nursing simulation and science demonstration.
Friday’s open house is aimed at helping applicants appreciate what the University of Windsor has to offer, but that doesn’t have to mean just first-entry programs, say organizers of a project in the Faculty of Education. They are hoping to attract University graduates interested in pursuing study in education.
“An education degree will enhance graduates’ abilities in leadership, professional development, instructional, motivational and interpersonal skills,” says acting dean Karen Roland.
By making a difference in their students and their classrooms, teachers can make a difference in the world. That was the theme of the sixth annual Social Justice in Education Conference, held Friday, February 1, in the Education Building.
In addition to presentations on topics as diverse as Aboriginal history, intercultural communication, civil liberties and addressing disabilities, the daylong event included a volunteer fair and exhibit of student projects promoting pluralism.
Professor Karen Roland will begin a one-year term as acting dean of the Faculty of Education on January 1.
A four-time UWindsor grad (BA 1993, B.Ed. 1994, M.Ed. 2000, PhD 2009), Dr. Roland has worked at the University since 1994, first in the equity office and currently as an experiential learning specialist. Her ongoing research interests are restorative justice, equity and peer education.
Provost Leo Groarke invited faculty and staff to welcome Roland to her new role.
