The campus campaign is hosting a fundraising barbecue outside the CAW Student Centre, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16.
The volunteer staff of retired UWindsor staff and faculty will serve a hotdog (veggie dogs available), pop and chips for a donation of $4.
Megan Nicol comes by her involvement with United Way naturally. The new University of Windsor student coordinator for the charity, she says her family has a long history of giving to the cause.
“Everybody back home always has such great things to say about the United Way,” says the fourth-year concurrent education student. “I think it is such an awesome organization.”
Nicol’s role is to help young people become aware of the United Way and its community work.
After many years of service, UWindsor retirees continued to give their time to help those in need.
Retired and current staff volunteered to run the annual barbecue Tuesday in the Student Centre Courtyard to raise funds for United Way, which funds non-profit organizations in Windsor and Essex County.
“We want to increase awareness and raise money for the campus campaign,” says volunteer Soula Serra, student development specialist in the Educational Development Centre. “There are many people in need, and the retirees felt it was important to help them.”
Lancer women’s basketball head coach Chantal Vallée is among the community leaders who will attend a networking event for Windsor’s young adults, students and professionals on Thursday, September 27.
The GenNext committee of the United Way offers young leaders a chance to meet and learn from their peers and mentors, as well as opportunities to volunteer and better the community, says coordinator Anjana Jacob, a 2011 graduate of the Odette School of Business.
The contributions of community partners make possible the work of the United Way, according to its CEO Penny Marrett.
“Last year, because of your support, United Way’s funded strategies helped 196,000 people in Windsor-Essex,” she told volunteers at its 2012 campaign kick-off, September 14.
Retired members of the UWindsor faculty and staff will kick off the campus campaign for United Way with its annual fundraising barbecue, Tuesday, September 25. A donation of just $4 will earn supporters a hotdog or veggie dog, chips and a drink.
The President’s Committee for the United Way invites applications for the 2012 sponsored employee (previously known as a loaned representative).
The sponsored employee functions as a member of a team with a reporting relationship to the associate director of resource development at the United Way, which supports charitable organizations and community services in Windsor and Essex County.
UWindsor’s Centre for Smart Community Innovation (CSCI) is the IT power behind the launch of the United Way Windsor-Essex County’s new volunteer matching Web site, WEVolunteer.ca, celebrated Tuesday in the CAW Student Centre.
WEVolunteer is an innovative and free service that matches the skills, interests and experiences of volunteers to local non-profit organizations. The United Way encourages volunteerism as a way to learn new skills, meet new people, improve resumes, and most importantly, give back to the community.
Several UWindsor employees are extra-happy to have contributed to the campus campaign for United Way, after winning prizes in a draw reserved for donors.
Sport therapist David Stoute received one year’s free on-campus parking, and Ryan Kenney of finance as well as the Leddy Library’s Kirsti Stipanicic and Michael Houlahan each won an extra vacation day.
The 2011 campus effort raised $112,000 for the United Way.
It was a visit to a local farm to see children with disabilities riding horses that inspired Soula Serra to get involved – and to stay involved – with the United Way.
