Top moustache growing honours awarded at fund-raising luncheon

Dino Spagnuolo’s first ever attempt at growing a moustache turned out to be a winner.

A clerk in the Leddy Library’s media centre, Spagnuolo tied for top honours with Dave Smith, an analyst in the university’s planning and budgets department, in a campus moustache growing contest.

“It’s an honour to have been chosen as a co-winner from among all these great-looking guys,” Spagnuolo said yesterday after a lunch held at the University Club to pick the winners.

The contest was held as fund-raiser to help support the Movember initiative, an annual campaign which calls on men worldwide to grow their moustaches to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer and mental health research.

A total of 15 men from two campus teams took part in the luncheon and asked members of the campus community to come to the club, make a donation and cast a ballot for the best and worst moustaches. Steve Fields, a university communications officer, took top honours in the “At Least You Tried” category.

In all, the event took in about $75, contributing to the two teams’ total to date of more than $2,100. For casting a ballot, Jelena Magliaro won two tickets to the School of Music’s Christmas Concert this Sunday, James Gauld won a pair of tickets to an upcoming University Players’ production and Anne Mullen won lunch for two at the University Club.

Spagnuolo said despite sharing top honours in the contest, he’ll probably be shaving come December 1.

“My wife isn’t real crazy about it, so it might not make a return until this time next year,” he said.

Of course there’s still time to make a donation, which can be done by visiting the Faculty of Mo or the Mo Leddy team pages.
