Reception recognizes excellence in inter-faculty students

A semester of study can be a bit of a slog, so it’s good every once in a while to take a break and measure your progress, says Daniel Tarade.

The second-year arts and science student, majoring in biochemistry and communications, was one of dozens of honour students in inter-faculty programs celebrated at a reception March 21 in Vanier Hall.

Martha Lee, head of the Centre for Inter-Faculty Programs, pointed to the students as recipients of thousands of dollars in awards and scholarships in calling them “the best of the very best.” The centre represents students in arts and science, forensic science, or environmental studies programs.

In addition to an entrance scholarship and an Outstanding Scholars award, Tarade received the 2012 Board of Governors Medal for top grades in his program. He attributes that success to the tight-knit group of arts and science students in his classes.

“We did a lot of group study through first year,” he says. “Without this group, I doubt I would have gotten so far.”

His classmate Ellie Prince, who has combined majors in biology and history, says the program allowed her to pursue varied interests. She says Thursday’s reception was a nice bonus.

“What’s not to like?” she asks “You work hard and you get recognized for it!”
