Trivia contest yields prize for chemistry student

Chemistry student Adrian Niec won Monday’s DailyNews quiz and the prize of an eight-gigabyte key ring USB drive, imprinted with the UWindsor logo.

No respondents got all the answers correct; Niec was the top finisher with only one incorrect. The questions all concerned recipients of honorary degrees from the University of Windsor; here are the correct answers:

  1. Supreme Court of Canada justice Rosalie Abella received her degree in 1988, while she was chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
  2. The University has conferred honorary doctor of letters degrees on Pierre Berton, Robertson Davies, Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan.
  3. U Thant received a doctor of laws in 1966, while serving as secretary-general of the United Nations.
  4. Of the honorary degree recipients Cassie Campbell, Ken Dryden, Silken Laumann, Richard Pound and Andrea Steen, only Dryden never competed as a Canadian Olympian.
  5. Mike Hurst is the only Windsor mayor to receive an honorary doctorate while in office.
  6. Gerald Emmett Carter, George Bernard Flahiff and John Michael Sherlock were all Roman Catholic bishops; Henry Gordon Hill was Anglican Bishop of Ontario and Robert Baird McClure, moderator of the United Church of Canada.
  7. Donald MacDonald was president of the Canadian Labour Congress when he was honoured in 1974.

To help celebrate the University of Windsor’s 50th anniversary, DailyNews will run a contest at the beginning of each week, offering a prize donated by the University Boookstore. Today’s prize, a beautiful USB drive imprinted with the UWindsor logo, is available for purchase from the Bookstore kiosk in the CAW Student Centre at a cost of $9.25.
