The reconstruction of California Avenue and other city streets adjoining campus will pose an inconvenience this summer, but will ultimately prove worthwhile, says Susan Mark, executive director of UWindsor Facility Services.
City crews will close California Avenue to through traffic between University and Wyandotte streets, as well as Fanchette Street from California to Askin avenues. They will upgrade watermains, sewage and storm piping on both streets and on California, will widen the street to accommodate metred and permit parking, install traffic islands, and add signal lights at its intersection with University.
Contractors will co-ordinate the work to allow access to Parking Lot Q, but Mark urges permit holders to enter from Sunset Avenue.
“We really appreciate everyone’s patience during this work,” she says. “The end result will be amazing.”
Once approval is received for the closure of Sunset Avenue between Wyandotte and the north end of Chrysler Hall, Mark says, the first priority will be the construction of a cul-de-sac closing the approach from University Avenue—work that will overlap with the city’s project on California Avenue.
Contractors are scheduled to complete the project by the start of the fall 2014 semester.
