Total team effort wins CIS track and field banner for Lancer men

In what head coach Dennis Fairall described as a “total team effort,” the Lancer men finished atop the team standings Saturday at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport track and field championship.

It marks the 20th time Windsor has won a CIS banner, and Fairall—who won the Bob Boucher Award as coach of the year in men’s track and field—said he was especially proud to claim it at home.

“We were able to get points from a variety of events and had a number of athletes come up with big performances when it counted,” he said. “It feels great to win our 20th CIS track and field team title in Windsor in front of our fans, alumni and supporters in our house.”

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues claimed the women’s title; the Lancer women finished eighth overall.

Medallists for Windsor included:

  • Gold for long jumper Arren Young  and the men’s 4x400m (Jesse Drennan, Corey Bellemore, Chris Kramer and Alex Ullman) and 4x800m (Paul La Marra, Taylor McArthur, Bellemore and Ullman) relay teams;
  • Silver for Drennan in pentathlon, Ullman in the men’s 600 metres and Virginia McLachlan in the women’s 60m ambulatory; and
  • Bronze for pentathlete Branden Wilhelm, pole vaulter Milos Savic, shot putter Eli Pawliw, Ullman in the 1000m and Sarah Swain in pole vault and the 60m hurdles.
