Exchange provides entry to international experience

An exchange experience in South Korea enhanced her view of the world, says Samantha Penny.

The fourth-year UWindsor student of communications, media, and film spent 10 months at Ewha University in the nation’s capital of Seoul.

“Exchange has added depth to my resumé beyond my academic and professional experience, by adding cultural relevance in an ever-globalizing work sphere,” Penny says. She is continuing her study of Korean and hopes to return to the peninsula in the near future.

Her great experience is shared by students who take advantage of the opportunity to study in another country for one or two semesters, says Michelle Fitzgerald, administrator of the University’s international exchange office.

“Students who return are changed forever,” she says. “It does so much to enhance their personal and professional development.”

She notes that the University has overseas partners for students in almost any program of study, and encourages faculty members to promote exchange to students who can benefit. Applications are now open for Fall 2018, says Fitzgerald; instructors may be approached to provide letters of reference.

Odette School of Business student Ben Scholl served a term in France and suggests it should be mandatory for a well-rounded education.

“Universities are supposed to challenge your thoughts, ideas, and understanding of things,” he says. “Exchange helps you achieve all that and more.”
