Grad to launch book on nuclear alliances

UWindsor grad (BA 2008) Alexander Lanoszka will launch his book Atomic Assurance with a discussion of his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Biblioasis bookstore.

Conventional wisdom holds that the security guarantees of military alliances discourage members from acquiring nuclear weapons, writes Dr. Lanoszka, an assistant professor of international relations at the University of Waterloo.

His book employs diplomatic history, foreign policy, and grand strategy to reconsider the power of alliances to stop nuclear proliferation.

Through intensive case studies of West Germany, Japan, and South Korea — as well as a series of smaller cases on Great Britain, France, Norway, Australia, and Taiwan — Atomic Assurance finds that it is easier to prevent an ally from initiating a nuclear program than to stop an ally that has already started one.

Joining Lanoszka in discussion is UWindsor political science professor Andrew Richter, author of Avoiding Armageddon: Canadian Military Strategy and Nuclear Weapons, 1950-1963.
