The logics of security performed at the border are propped by old prejudices which continue to exert a spectral presence over the process, says Radha Hegde. A professor in the department of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, she will explore the issue in her free public lecture “Disposability, Bodies and Media Infrastructures,” Friday, March 1, in the Performance Hall, SoCA Armouries.

Dr. Hegde is the author of Mediating Migration, editor of Circuits of Visibility: Gender and Transnational Media Cultures, and co-editor of Routledge Handbook of the Indian Diaspora. Her lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The presentation is a keynote for the Edgy Media Symposium, which will bring together scholars, curators, and artists for discussion of how communications scholarship, media studies, and media arts have been shaped by borders and migration.

The symposium extends a cross-border installation of the international touring exhibition Feedback #4: Marshall McLuhan and the Arts at the School of Creative Arts and Detroit’s College for Creative Studies.

A reception celebrating the exhibition’s opening will follow Hegde’s lecture, in the Armouries at 7 p.m.
