Lancers win third straight national title in women’s basketball

The Lancer women’s basketball team defeated the host Regina Cougars 66-57 Sunday to win Windsor’s third straight Bronze Baby Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions.

Guard Korissa Williams was named the tournament’s most valuable player. She told a national audience watching on the Score network that it is “an honour” to play on the squad, which went undefeated through the season. Williams scored 46 points through three games at the tournament.

Lancer men’s team finishes second at national track meet

Matt Walters earned a gold medal in the 1500m and silver in the 3000m runs to lead the Lancer men to a silver-medal team finish at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport track and field championship tournament in Edmonton on the weekend.

Windsor led the point total through the first two days of competition before the Ontario champion Guelph Gryphons pulled ahead to win the team banner. Windsor’s women finished fifth overall, ending their four-year reign as national champions.

Lancer women aiming for record at national track championships

If the Lancer women win a fifth straight team banner at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport track and field championship tournament opening today in Edmonton, the feat would tie a record—their own.

The Windsor women claimed five consecutive national titles from 1992 to 1996.

Head coach Dennis Fairall admits his team will be hard-pressed to repeat that accomplishment, after a fourth-place finish at the Ontario University Athletics meet.

Cross-country teams ready to race in national championship meet

The Lancer cross-country teams will look for top performances on Saturday when Canadian Interuniversity Sport celebrates 50 years of competition in the sport during its national championship meet in London. The event will feature 125 athletes from 25 schools in the women’s five-kilometre race at noon; 129 runners from 24 institutions are scheduled to take the start of the 10-kilometre men’s event at 1 p.m.

Windsor athletes named all-stars in cross-country, soccer

Ontario University Athletics named Lancer Matt Walters a first-team all-star after his fourth-place finish at the provincial cross-country meet last weekend paced the Windsor men’s team to a silver medal.

His teammates Jeremy Cooper and Nick Falk qualified for second-team all-start status.

On the women’s side, Jenn Corrick’s 10th-place standing earned her an all-star berth.

Next up for cross-country is the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship meet, November 10 in London.

Lancer runner to share hometown honour

Lancer runner Matt Walters, winner of provincial and national medals in both cross-country and track and field, is winning recognition from his hometown of North Bay.

He is a co-recipient, along with University of Missouri swimmer Dominique Bouchard, of the 2011 sports achievement award from the city’s Downtown Improvement Area.

Walters captured gold in the 2011 Ontario University Athletics track and field championship, helping the Windsor Lancers 4x800-metre team to a first-place finish. He also won a bronze medal in the men’s 3,000-metre race.

Senate approves more stringent qualifications for President’s Honour Roll

Making it onto the President’s Honour Roll became a little more of an honour as Senate approved toughening the criteria at its meeting April 13.

Under the new policy, the honour will be restricted to students in first-entry undergraduate programs who have completed a minimum of 10 courses with a cumulative grade-point average of 12.0 or higher.

Event to celebrate graduation of med school charter class

Windsor Regional Hospital will open a week-long celebration of the first class to graduate from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s Windsor program with Rock the Grad on Tuesday, April 17.

The event will feature a barbecue buffet hosted by gourmet butcher Ted Farron and the Penalty Box restaurant as well as the music of the local group, Is there a Band in the House.
