Maryan Amalow values the importance of community and student engagement, says dean of students Clayton Smith.
“She always ensures to lend a helping hand for students with her advocacy and leadership experience as she was a student who can relate to their issues,” he told a group gathered June 8 at Windsor Water World to see Amalow—a UWindsor grad (BA 2005, MA 2008) and executive director of the Organization of Part-time University Students—receive an award in recognition of her efforts to improve the lives of women and girls in Ontario.
Windsor West MPP Teresa Piruzza presented the certificate on behalf of Laurel Broten, Ontario Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues. Piruzza noted that Amalow’s nominator, Abdullah Cisman, cited her role with OPUS as one of the highest positions held by a Somali woman in Windsor.
“Our community is proud of Ms. Amalow’s achievement in leadership both inside and outside of this community,” wrote Cisman, president of the Somali Community of Windsor.
