Welcome Week not just for students, say organizers

Faculty and staff can help to make new students feel at home while gearing themselves up for the new school year by participating in Windsor Welcome Week activities, says organizer Soula Serra of the Educational Development Centre.

“First of all, we hope to get every office or department involved,” Serra says. “So if you have any material you would like us to distribute throughout the first week from the Welcome Tent, please drop off 200 to 500 flyers or items of swag to room 117, Dillon Hall by Thursday, August 30.”

She adds that employees don’t have to leave all the fun to students. Faculty and staff can join in the theme, “Unleashing Your Inner Lancer,” especially if they attend the Welcoming Celebration on Wednesday, September 5.

“This event is geared to first-year students, of course, but we think everyone has a role in helping our new students feel they made the right choice to come here,” says Serrra.

The celebration begins at 3 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre fieldhouse; attendees are encouraged to wear their Lancer gear.

A full list of the week’s events is available on the Welcome Week Web site, www.windsorwelcomeweek.com.

Buttons invite questions from campus newcomers

Ask Me buttonThe Educational Development Centre invites staff and faculty to wear “Ask Me” buttons for the first half of September, making it easier for new students to identify people who can provide them with a welcoming smile, directions or basic campus information.

The buttons are white and sport the university’s logo. To get yours, contact Joanne Gibbs in Student Affairs at buddy@uwindsor.ca.

Wherever possible, departments should coordinate their requests so that all of the buttons can be sent to one contact person for distribution.
