University’s growth “gratifying,” says early grad

It is very gratifying for him to see how the University of Windsor has grown from its early beginnings, says alumnus Ted Shiner (BSc 1966, MSc 1967).

He began his student career in September 1963, just as the University was launching, and was on hand for the iconic photo of students celebrating its birth around a large cake.

Among his recollections of the early years is making do with temporary accommodations for physics labs while Essex Hall was under construction, and a prank that involved bringing a faculty member’s Volkswagen Beetle to rest outside his office.

“Apparently a small WW bug looks huge when it is sitting in the hallway,” Shiner says.

Share your UWindsor memories in advance of the Celebration Weekend, September 19 to 22. Send photos to anniversary@uwindsor.ca, with your name, degree and year of
graduation, and a brief description.

The University is also looking for memorabilia for its 50th Anniversary historic displays. If you have an item such as a yearbook, athletic jersey, textbook, lab equipment, etc., that you would like to lend, e-mail a photo to anniversary@uwindsor.ca for consideration.
