Non-verbal argumentation subject of lecture

Can you argue without words? Philosopher Leo Groarke will propose an account of meaning that can accommodate this notion Tuesday in a free public lecture entitled “How To Do Things With(out) Words.”

Dr. Groarke says “multimodal” arguments may be composed of elements other than words, including pictures, direct observations, smells, musical motifs or non-verbal sounds.

Groarke is a fellow of the Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric, which is sponsoring his June 3 talk at 11 a.m. in room 288-1, Essex Hall. A former UWindsor provost, he will begin a term as president of Trent University on July 1.
