Lancer women’s basketball coach to assist Brazilian Olympic team

Chantal Vallée, head coach of the four-time defending national champion Lancer women’s basketball program, says that joining the coaching staff of the Brazilian Olympic team is a tremendous opportunity.

She will join the team in Brazil on June 19 as its opens training camp in preparation for the world championships hosted by Turkey from September 27 to October 5. Brazil is currently ranked seventh.

“This will be a great chance for me to gain further experience at the senior national level,” says Vallée, Canadian Interuniversity Sport coach of the year. “I am really looking forward to working with the top women’s players in Brazil.”

Hoops standout headed to Swedish pro league

Lancer alumna Miah-Marie Langlois has signed a professional contract to play with Northland Basket Lulea, the reigning champions of the Swedish Damligan.

“Northland is a great place to start my pro career in Europe,” said Langlois. “I am excited to play for Northland and motivated to help win them another championship.”

The 5'8" point guard helped lead Windsor to four straight national titles, three times winning championship tournament MVP and all-Canadian defensive player of the year honours. After receiving the Banner Shield as Lancer female athlete of the year in 2012, she shared the award in 2013 with teammate Jessica Clemençon, and in 2014 won the DeMarco Award as top female student-athlete.

Langlois is currently in Edmonton at the training camp of the Canadian senior women’s team, hoping to earn a spot on the roster for the 2014 FIBA World Championships. Read the full story, “Langlois signs professional contract in Sweden.”

League realigns basketball divisions

Ontario University Athletics will employ a four-division structure and four rounds of playoffs for varsity basketball, the league announced last week along with its 2014/15 schedule.

The Lancers will compete in the West Division, along with Algoma, Waterloo, Western and Laurier, playing one home and one away game against each, as well as a single game against each team from the Central, East and North divisions. Three teams from each division will qualify for post-season play.
