Veterans lead as Lancers even up season record

Fifth-year players Austin Kennedy and Evan Pszczonak connected for two touchdowns as the Lancer football team defeated Laurier 39-34 Saturday on Alumni Field to even Windsor’s record at 1-1. Quarterback Kennedy completed 22 of 38 passes for 326 yards and ran for 58 yards, including a touchdown. Receiver Pszczonak finished the game with six catches and 144 yards.

The Lancers needed two rallies to win, erasing an early 13-0 deficit to take a 14-13 edge at halftime and recovering from a 33-16 Laurier lead in the fourth quarter. Read a full game recap, “Lancer football rallies twice to defeat Golden Hawks” at goLancers.ca.

Windsor will rest this weekend before heading to Waterloo to take on the Warriors on September 20.

In other varsity action, women’s soccer won both road games this weekend, 4-1 over Brock on Saturday and 2-0 over McMaster on Sunday. Becca Fuerth scored two on Saturday; Laura Leece and Giulia Barile accounted for Windsor’s other goals.  Barile notched another against McMaster after Bella Riccardi scored the winner just four minutes into the game. The men’s soccer team split its weekend series, shutting out Brock 3-0 on Saturday and losing by the same score Sunday to McMaster. Kyle Ruggaber had two goals and Bobby Evans added a single for Windsor against the Badgers. Read full coverage on the team’s website.

Both soccer teams open their home seasons next weekend, hosting the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and the York Lions on Sunday on Alumni Field. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3:15 p.m. both days.

The women’s volleyball team took three of four matches at the Julie Martin Invitational tournament this weekend at Madonna University, beating Davenport University  3-1 (13-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21) and losing to St. Xavier University 0-3 (17-25, 14-25, 15-25) on Friday, then recovering Saturday to top Rochester University 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-27, 15-10) and sweep Purdue North Central 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20). Lancer Shannon Dean was named to the all-tournament team.
