A series of events on the UWindsor campus this week will lead up to March 8 observances of International Women’s Day.
The Womyn’s Centre presents activities Tuesday to Thursday in the CAW Student Centre.
Tuesday’s theme is Body Positivity, with booths in the Commons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. including Craftivism: Ugly on Purpose, Culture Jam(boree), and a photobooth, Reclaiming the Selfie. Salon A of Ambassador Auditorium is the setting for three hour-long instructional workshops: Hip Hop at 6 p.m., Laughter Yoga at 7:15 p.m., and Burlesque at 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday’s theme is Women and Work and will feature “Living Books,” women from fields and professions traditionally dominated by men. The event will run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons. The centre will screen the 1979 film drama Norma Rae at 6:30 p.m. Sally Fields won an Oscar for her portrayal of the title character, who organizes a labour union at the textile mill where she works.
Thursday’s wrap-up on the theme Moving Forward: This is Not the End will see three booths in the Commons from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Postcard Project invites participants to write postcards to women who have inspired them; A Promise to Myself will see participants write a promise to themselves on a whiteboard and take a photo of that promise for Facebook, and a Jeopardy-themed booth will offer a quiz on the subject “Women Through the Ages.” An international film festival in the Womyn’s Centre, room 291, will feature screenings of Honor Diaries at 6 p.m., It’s a Girl at 7:15, The Invisible War at 8:30, and Girl Rising at 10:15 p.m.
The Humanities Research Group will present two lectures by bioethicist Françoise Baylis of Dalhousie University:
- “Ladies, don’t freeze your eggs!” Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in room 102, Toldo Health Education Centre; and
- “A relational view of conscience and physician conscientious action,” Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m. in room 204, Toldo Health Education Centre.
