Freezing their eggs is not the right way for professional women to circumvent any conflict between their careers and motherhood, says Françoise Baylis.

“Egg freezing entrenches the false belief that women must continue to choose between raising a family and having a career,” says Dr. Baylis, Canada Research Chair in Bioethics and Philosophy at Dalhousie University. “The underlying assumption is that women cannot be good mothers and good employees at the same time.”

She will address this issue in a free public lecture entitled “Ladies, don’t freeze your eggs!” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in room 102, Toldo Health Education Centre.

It is the first of two appearances she will make on the UWindsor campus this week, sponsored by the Humanities Research Group and the women’s and gender studies program in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Baylis will lead a masterclass Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m. on “A relational view of conscience and physician conscientious action.” An informal discussion of a contemporary policy challenge will follow her formal philosophical presentation.
