Students claim music alum as inspiration

Two third-year music majors who will join flutist Alexander Zonjic (BMA 1975) in concert this weekend say they are honoured to be part of the event.

Sebastian Bachmeier will play tenor saxophone and Austin Di Pietro trumpet in the SoCA Horns ensemble, backing up a man they call “one of Windsor’s most successful musical figures” for a program called “Zonjic Meets Motown.” The concert, Saturday at the Capitol Theatre, will raise funds for the School of Creative Arts and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

“It is inspiring to see a University of Windsor music alum who has been able to take his musical career to such great heights,” says Di Pietro. “The two of us perform regularly outside of the School of Creative Arts, but this is one of the most exciting performance opportunities with which we have been presented.”

The students promise the concert will showcase the rich musical history of the Windsor-Detroit area.

“The selections that we will be performing with Mr. Zonjic are all his original compositions,” Bachmeier says. “Most of the charts are reminiscent of the Motown style, which has been a large influence in our own playing in the past months.”

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. A presentation by architect Veronika Mogyorody will offer images and insight on the work to prepare the former Armouries building as the downtown campus of the School of Creative Arts. That presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.
