Professor and student among local tech award winners

A UWindsor professor and a computer science student were among the honourees at an awards ceremony Monday recognizing leaders in technology in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

Chemistry professor Tricia Carmichael was named “Tech Researcher of the Year” and Noah Campbell, a third-year computer science major with a minor in business, was named “Young Tech Professional of the Year” during the second annual YQG Tech Awards.

Held at the riverfront J.P. Wiser’s Brand Centre, the event was organized by WEtech Alliance. President Yvonne Pilon called it a chance to celebrate those advancing the sector: “This is a night to bring our tight knit tech community even closer together.”

The evening also served to launch Tech Week YQG, intended to showcase industry leaders to build a unique experience for entrepreneurs, tech lovers, researchers, and investors. The Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre (EPICentre) sponsored the launch to promote the local tech community, says Wen Teoh, the centre’s venture start director.

“The EPICentre is proud to support initiatives like Tech Launch, which are all about supporting and celebrating entrepreneurs, innovation and tech talent,” she says.
