Concert to showcase best student performers

A concert Friday, Jan. 11, will feature music students competing for the Ron W. Ianni Memorial Performance Scholarship.

Each of the contestants qualified by earning top marks in the December juries.

This year’s competitors include:

  • Justin Skalaa, percussionist
  • Daniel Turner, classical guitarist
  • Jael Hernandez, soprano, classical voice
  • Rachel Montsch-Marentette, clarinetist
  • David Katich-McNamara, baritone, classical voice
  • Anne Storey, flutist
  • Matthew Lepain, trumpet
  • Jefferson Hills, pianist
  • Nicholas Baddeley, jazz/pop drums (instrumentalist)
  • Madeline Doornaert, vocalist, jazz/pop

Each student will perform a selection of music for jurors who will select a recipient for the 2019 Ianni Performance Scholarship, established in 2005 to honour the late president of the University of Windsor. The $500 annual award is open only to full-time students enrolled in a music degree program.

Jazz-pop performances include combos backing up the soloist. Classical performers are accompanied by a pianist or another instrumentalist; piano and classical guitar competitors are solo performers.

The event is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall, SoCA Armouries, 37 University Ave. E. Admission is $20, with a $5 rate for students. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.uwindsor.ca/music or at the door.
